State delegates play a crucial role in Utah’s Caucus & Convention System, ensuring that grassroots Republican voters have a direct voice in selecting candidates and shaping the party’s platform.
Key Responsibilities of a State Delegate
Represent Your Precinct
Delegates are elected at neighborhood caucus meetings and serve as a voice for their precinct, representing the interests and concerns of local Republican voters.
Nominate Republican Candidates
Delegates attend the Utah Republican State Convention, where they hear from candidates and vote to determine which Republican candidates will appear on the primary ballot—or, if a candidate secures 60% or more of the delegate vote, they become the party nominee.
Engage with Candidates
Delegates meet with candidates running for office, ask questions, and evaluate their positions on key issues before voting at the convention. This ensures that Republican nominees reflect the values and priorities of Utah’s conservative voters.
Shape the Party’s Platform
Delegates have the opportunity to propose and vote on party resolutions and platform changes, helping to guide the direction of the Utah Republican Party.
Stay Informed & Involved
Throughout their term, delegates are expected to stay engaged with political developments, attend meetings, and communicate with fellow Republicans in their precinct to keep them informed.
As a state delegate, you play a key role in selecting Republican candidates, and candidates need a way to communicate with you. Providing your contact information allows:
- Candidates to reach out and share their platforms, answer your questions, and seek your support.
- The Utah Republican Party to send you important updates about conventions, meetings, and delegate responsibilities.
- Your fellow precinct members to stay informed, as they may want to discuss candidate choices and party issues with you.
In order to be an effective delegate you must be willing to receive a lot of mail, phone calls, text messages and emails. As such you will need to provide your cell number, email and physical address. If you prefer not giving out this information or not receiving all of this communication please reconsider being a delegate.
To become a delegate, you must attend your local precinct caucus meeting, which takes place in march of even-numbered years, and be elected by your fellow precinct members.
For more information on becoming a delegate, visit our Caucus Information Page or contact your County Republican Party or the Utah Republican Party.
Delegates are encouraged to:
- Attend candidate town halls and forums
- Read candidate websites and policy positions
- Speak with candidates directly
- Stay informed through Republican Party updates
As a delegate you will receive a lot of mail, phone calls, text messages, emails and other forms of communications from candidates, campaigns, other delegates and members of the precinct which you serve.
